Björn Myreze is honoured to be the winner of the local “Name of the Year Award 2013” arranged by the local newspaper Åsane tidene in Norway.

After several months of public voting, the finalist Björn Myreze was a clear winner. The award was presented in front of a crowd of 400 students, 50 teachers and a very special boy-scout leader who has meant a lot to Björn during his school years as a mentor and inspiring coach. It all went down in a packed gymnasium where Björn himself was a student at Åsane Elementary School. He even designed the innovative logo for the school when he was as young as a 10 year old. This is where it all started.

It’s 20 years since Björn was a student at Åsane Elementary School and this time he was back with a flash with inspiring words to share with the excited students  –  this time he brought a band, BlueGem.

The prize was a $1000 cheque, but the twist in the story is rather unusual, as he didn’t keep the prize money himself. He generouslly chose to give away the prize to the people that has meant the most in his early days to symbolise the importance of getting support as a youngster and having someone to believe in you and see your talent.  Björn also added another $2000 from his own pocket, to give to his old teacher and boy scout-leader Harald Mikkelsen. Mikkelsen then again forwarded the prize money towards the local boy-scout organisation KFUK/KFUM(YMCA) where Mikkelsen has been the leader for the last 25 years. The gymnasium kids were ecstatic throughout the entire event. Before departing from the gymnasium, Myreze said the following to the 400 students:

“You don’t need to play football to be cool and to do things well. Join the marching band, join the boy scouts.Engage yourself and believe in what you do. I’m the nerd who sat in front of the computer all day and my life came out quite good. You will do the same thing – being good at what you do.” Björn Myreze
